Erosional landforms Flashcards
What is an erosional landform
A landform created by the removal of rock and sediment due to natural forces like water, wind, and ice
Name 4 coastal erosional processes
Hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition, and solution
How are headlands and bays formed
When softer rock erodes faster than harder rock, creating bays and leaving headlands jutting out into the sea
Describe the process of cave, arch, stack, and stump formation
Cave- hydraulic action and abrasion widen cracks in a headland
Arch- erosion deepens the cave until it breaks through the headland
Stack- the arch collapses, leaving a tall rock pillar
Stump- The stack erodes further and collapses
What is a wave cut platform
A flat, rocky surface left behind as cliffs erode and retreat due to wave action
Describe the formation of a wave cut platform
A wave cut platform forms when destructive waves erode the base of a cliff, creating a wave cut notch through processes like abrasion and hydraulic action. As the notch grows, the cliff above becomes unstable and collapses, leaving behind a flat platform.
What factors influence the rate of coastal erosion
Rock type, wave energy, weather conditions, and human activity
