Erosion, Transportation & Deposition Flashcards
What is hydraulic action?
Force of water breaking rock particles away from river bed.
What is abrasion?
Rocks picked up by river - scrape and rub against river channel.
What is attrition?
Rocks smashing into each other - breaking into smaller fragments.
What is solution?
Dissolving of some types of rock.
What is traction?
Large boulders and rock being pushed along river bed by force of water.
What is saltation?
Pebble-sized rocks being bounced along the river bed.
What is suspension?
Small particles being carried along by the water.
What is solution?
Soluble materials dissolving in the water.
What is deposition?
When a river drops its eroded material.
When does deposition happen?
When a river slows down and looses velocity.
