What is attrition?

A

Where different bits of material carried by waves and seawater hit against each other

Q

What is abrasion?

A

Where pieces of material are picked up by the waves and hit or scrape against the seabed or the side of the cliff.

Q

Describe the process of Longshore Drift:

A
  1. A prevailing wind direction angles wind towards the coast.
  2. The wind controls the waves, therefore the swash will go up the beach at this angle.
  3. Backwash falls back to the sea at right angles to the coastline because only gravity acts on it.
  4. This continually moves sediment in a right angled triangle.

16
Q

What is Suspension??

A

Where silt and sand particles are held in water (but not dissolved)

17
Q

What are the main types of waves?

A

Constructive and destructive

18
Q

What is the difference between destructive and constructive waves?

A

Destructive waves are taller and more frequent than constructive waves

19
Q

Describe two characteristics of constructive waves:

A

Not very tall
Bring Calm seas

20
Q

Describe two characteristics of destructive waves:

A

High frequency(10-15 waves per minute)
Stronger backwash than swash
