Erosion Flashcards
Erosion
the gradual destruction by wind, water, or other natural agents
Weathering
wear away or change the appearance or texture of something by exposure to the air for long amount of time.
Water Cycle
the cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth’s oceans, atmosphere, and land
Evaporation
the process of turning form liquid to vapor
Condensation
the conversion vapor to liquid
Precipitation
rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground
Percolation
the process of liquid passing through a filter
Runoff
the draining of water from a surface
Tributary
a river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake
Watershed
an area or ridge of land that separates waters flowing to different rivers, basins, or seas
Continental Divide
A continental divide is a drainage divide on a continent that ]feeds into one ocean or sea
Deposition
he geological process in which sediments, soil and rocks are added to a land form or land mass
Delta
a land form that forms from deposition of sediment carried by a river as the flow leaves its mouth and enters slower-moving or standing water
Alluvial Fan
a triangle-shaped deposit of gravel, sand, and even smaller pieces of sediment, such as silt
Floodpain
a generally flat area of land next to a river or stream
Water Table
upper level of an underground surface in which the soil or rocks are permanently saturated with water
Sewage Treatment Plants
Physical, chemical, and biological processes are used to remove contaminants and produce treated wastewater
Septic Tank
a chamber made of concrete, fiberglass, PVC or plastic, through which sewage flows for treatment
Sea Stacks
a geological land form consisting of a steep and often vertical column or columns of rock in the sea near a coast, formed by wave erosion
Sea Arches
a natural opening eroded out of a cliff face by marine processes
Sea Caves
a type of cave formed primarily by the wave action of the sea
Headlands
a section of land jutting out into the sea
Beach
a common feature of a coastline made of eroded rock
Glacier
a huge mass of ice that moves slowly over land
Glacial Drift
as gravel, sand, or clay, transported and deposited by a glacier or by glacial melt water
Till
unsorted material deposited directly by glacial ice and showing no stratification
Stratified Drift
sediments deposited by glacial melt water that are sorted by size
