Erosion Flashcards
Sheer force against a cliff causes bits to break. As waves hit the face, compressed air blasts away fragments.
Hydraulic Action
Waves pick up material and as they break, material is hurled at the cliff. This “sand paper” effect is the most effective.
Abrasion
Sand and pebbles constantly collide as they are moved by the breaking waves. This wears away material making it smaller and rounder.
Attrition
Sea water is very corrosive and can slowly dissolve calk and limestone, increasing the size of cracks and joints so that the forces of erosion are more effective. Salt spray can get in cracks and when it evaporates, salt crystals are formed. As the the crystals grow in size, they can fore rocks apart.
Corrosion (Solution)
Softer Rocks such as clay expand when they are wet and contract when they dry out. this continued expansion and contraction can weaken rocks and make them more easily eroded.
