Erosion Flashcards
What is Abrasion/Corrasion
The rock fragments and stones that are carried by the river are scraped against its bed and banks wearing them away (almost like sandpaper)
What is Hydraulic Action
The sheer force of the turbulent waves hitting the river bank will squeeze air into the cracks in the rock and dislodge material (like a powerhouse)
What is Solution/Corrosion
Water in the river will be slightly acidic and so will react with rocks of a certain chemical composition (e.g. chalk and limestone) this dissolves them
What is Attrition
As fragments of rock carried in the river knock against each other pieces are broken away. As the load moves downstream and the attrition process continues the rock fragments become smaller and smoother
What is Erosion
The wearing away of the land by a moving agent
