Q

Describe anabolic steroids:

  • definition
  • available?
  • detect?
A

Anabolic steroids are synthetic hormones which resemble the male hormone TESTOSTERONE + taken to promote protein synthesis and muscle growth

  • easily accessible + available = tablet, capsule, solution (injection), cream form
  • easy to detect in urine sample

Q

Describe Erythropoietin (EPO) / Recombinant Erythropoietin (RhEPO)

  • define
  • availability?
  • detect?
A
  • Erythropoietin is a hormone responsible for the production of red blood cells (EPO) = increased red blood cells
  • synthetically made EPO = Recombinant RhEPO
  • available as an injection
  • difficult to detect via blood and/or urine sample due to naturally circulating levels of EPO in the body
  • unusually high blood cell count
  • take plasma infusion to reduce health risks + positive result

Q

What are the disads of EPO?

A

EPO abuse can lead to:

  • hyper-viscosity of blood = increased blood viscosity decreased cardiac output, increased risk of blood clots + heart failure)
  • decrease of naturally produced EPO

11
Q

What are the ads of EPO?

A
  • aerobic benefit
  • increase production of red blood cells
  • increase oxygen transport
  • increase aerobic capacity = therefore intensity + duration of performance before becoming fatigued

Q

Describe Human Growth Hormone (HGH)

  • define
  • availability?
  • detect?
A
  • HGH is an illegal synthetic product copying the natural growth hormone to increase protein synthesis for muscle growth, recovery + repair
  • available as injection = preferred over testosterone (less hormonal disturbance)
  • difficult to detect due to naturally circulating levels

Q

What are the ads of HGH?

A
  • aerobic benefit
  • increased muscle mass + strength
  • increased fat metabolism (decreased fat mass = leaner)
  • increased blood glucose
  • increased speed of recovery
  • increased intensity + duration of training

life threatening consequences:

  • abnormal bone + muscle development
  • enlargement of vital organs
  • heart failure
  • increased risk of cancers

Q

What toe of sports is EPO used for?

A

Endurance based:

  • cyclists
  • rowers
  • marathon runners
17
Q

What type of sports is anabolic steroids used for?

A
  • explosive sports
18
Q

cooling aids - pre-event

A

pre-event:

  • e.g. ice vests + cold towel wraps = reduce core body temp to sustain intensity and speed, reducing thermal strain and cardiovascular drift
  • reduce sweating, dehydration, overheating
  • also used for injury treatment e.g. ice packs + spray during or after an event = reduce pain and swelling
  • nerve endings numbed to educe pain
  • arterioles vasoconstrict to reduce blood flow + minimise swelling
19
Q

cooling aids - post-event + disads

A

post-event:

  • ice baths = speed up recovery, reducing DOMS
  • blood vessels constrict, removing waste products + lactic acid from muscle tissue
  • after bath, blood vessels dilate, flushing muscle with oxygenated blood flow = repair damaged cells

disads:

  • can cause ice burns
  • hides or complicates injuries
  • dangerous for those with hypertension or heart conditions
