Eroding World Flashcards
What happens in the upper course of the river?
In the upper course of the river, the river is narrow, shallow and flows down steep slopes. In Highland areas
There are large bounders and features like V shaped valleys and waterfalls.
What happens in the middle course of the river?
In the middle course , the land is more gently sloping so the river becomes wider and there are many meanders
What happens in the lower course of the river?
The land is very flat with loud large floodplains either side of the wider and deeper river some rivers have large estuaries at their mouth with the sea
What is the step-by-step formation of a waterfall?
- Water flows off a piece of rock.
- The overhang collapses.
- The plunge pool develops.
- The waterfall retreats upstream.
- Steep gorge like valleys are made.
What are the three profiles of a river?
The upper Middle and lower courses
What does the drainage basin refer to?
This is an area of land drained by river and its tributaries
What is meant by the term erosion?
Erosion is the wearing aware of the land by forces such as water, wind and ice
What is meant by the term abrasion?
Pebbles and sand scrape along the landscape acting like sandpaper to wear them down
What is meant by the term solution?
Weak acid in the water, dissolve the rocks and sediment
What is meant by the term hydraulic action?
When fast flowing water smashes into the river banks or cliffs causing them to break
What is meant by the term attrition?
Rocks and pebbles hit against each other wearing them down before becoming rounder and smoother
What is a glacier?
A glacier is a large mass of ice often shaped like a river that flows or slides very slowly downhill under the force of gravity
How are Corries formed?
The ice freezes around rocks and stones under the glacier and tugs or plugs them out. The plucked rocks and stones scrape bits off the glacier bed as they are carried along.
How can you find landforms on an OS map?
Contour lines
What are the five different defences that can be built to stop coastal erosion?
Seawall
Beach nourishment
Rock armour
Groynes
Dune regeneration
