Trust vs. Mistrust (Infancy) 1-12 months
A
- Relies on caregivers to meet basic needs
- Warmth, food, comfort, and forming trust in others
- Mistrust is a result of inconsistent, inadequate, or unsafe care

Autonomy Vs Shame and Doubt (Toddler) 1-3 years old
A
- Independent motor and Language skills develop such as toileting, feeding, dressing themselves, speech improves
- Shame/Doubt may occur if parents are too overprotective

Initiative vs Guild (Preschool) 3-6 years
A
- Takes initiative in learning and explores the why and how
- Guilt may occur if child experiences restrictions or reprimands when seeking new experiences and learning

Industry Vs. Inferiority (School age) 6-12
A
- Focuses on end result of achievements
- Gains pleasure from receiving recognition
- Inferiority or lack of self-confidence may develop due to not accepted by peers or cannot met parental expectations.

Identity vs Role Confusion (adolescence) 12-18 years
A
- Transition from childhood to Adulthood
- Hormonal changes, mood swings, trying on new roles, and rebellion are all normal behavior
- Role confusion occurs if unable to establish an identity and sense of direction

Intimacy vs. Isolation (Young adulthood)
A
- Establish close, honest, and loving relationships and make commitments
- Fear of this can result in loneliness and isolations

Generativity vs. Stagnation (Middle adulthood) 30-64 years
A
- Involvement with family, friends, and community
- Becoming concerned for the next generation and wanting to make a contribution to the world
- Stagnation can occur becoming obsessed with their own needs, or regress to earlier level of coping

Ego integrity vs. Despair (Later adulthood)
A
- Reminisces over life events, proving fulfilment and purpose
- May not be fearful of dying if integrity has been achieved
- Failures or missed opportunities can crease despair
