identity vs identity confusion - characteristics
adolescence
- teens integrate the opinions of influential people in their life into their own likes, dislikes and beliefs
- the desired outcome is to have clear sense of own values, beliefs, occupational goals and relationship expectation
- Identity confusion
identity confusion - definition
occurs when people have:
- not had the opportunity to try different things - or cannot decide what to do
- jumping from one job/relationship to the other
intimacy vs isolation - characteristics
- key outcome is “intimacy”
- one learns about commitment and this intimacy can occur between friends, family and partners
- relationships deepen and become more solid as find out what love means
- successful completion can lead to comfortable relationships and a sense of commitment, safety and care
^this definition is black & white - doesn’t consider that different things might interfere with a person’s ability to do this
intimacy - definition
the ability to share with and care for another person without losing oneself in the process
generativity vs stagnation - characteristics
- people in middle adulthood will have to make choices relating to whether they will generate (contribute to society) or stagnate (not contribute)
stagnation - definition
place own comfort and security above challenge and sacrifice, self-centred, self-indulgent, self-absorbed, lack of involvement or concern with young people, little interest in work productivity, self-improvement
generativity - definition
reaching out to others in ways that give to and guide the next generation, commitment extends beyond self, typically realised through child rearing, other family, work mentoring relationships also generative
ego integrity vs despair - characteristics
ego integrity:
- an acceptance of oneself
- one’s parents
- one’s life (some despair inevitable)
- older individuals must develop an acceptance of their lives and impending death
- if not, they may be overwhelmed by the lack of time to start anew and unable to accept death = DESPAIR
