Basic trust vs. mistrust
Birth-1 year
Trust comes from warm, responsive care
Mistrust comes from having to wait to long for comfort or being handles harshly
Autonomy vs. shame and doubt
1-3 years
Autonomy comes from reasonable free choice
Shame and doubt is when the parent forces or shames the child
Initiative vs. guilt
3-6 years
Initiative: sense of responsibility comes from parents support of new sense of purpose
Guilt: comes from demanding too much self-control
Industry vs. Inferiority
6-11 years
Industry: develops the capacity to work/cooperate with others at school
Inferiority: negative experiences leads to feeling incompetent
Identity vs. identity confusion
Adolescence
Identity: “Who am I, and what is my place in society?” Self-chosen values and goals
Identity confusion: confusion about future adult roles
Intimacy vs. isolation
Emerging adulthood
Intimacy: establish intimate ties to others
Isolation: because of earlier disappointments, cannot form close relationships… isolation
Generativity vs. stagnation
Adulthood
Generativity: giving to next gen. through child rearing, caring for others, productivity
Stagnation: fails in these ways
Integrity vs. despair
Old age
Integrity: feeling that life was worth living as it happened
Despair: dissatisfaction with life, fear death
