Erikson Flashcards
Erikson divided personality growth into
eight stages from birth to death.
If a child is punished for displaying Oedipal feelings, he or she will develop feelings of
guilt
The final stage of life is a time of
ego integrity or despair.
Erik Erikson lived out one of his most famous concepts in his
several identity crises.
According to Erikson, the basic strengths
develop when each crisis has been resolved satisfactorily.
In middle age, the ways of coping are
generativity or stagnation
According to Erikson, at the stage when trust or mistrust are the ways of coping, the most important body part is the
mouth.
During the ages 12 to 18, you must
resolve problems of identity.
To Erikson, toilet training is
a test of the infant’s autonomous will.
According to Erikson’s epigenetic principle of maturation,
development is determined by a combination of biological and social factors.
The psychosocial stage analogous (similar) to Freud’s phallic stage is concerned with
initiative versus guilt.
From his early work and analysis with Anna Freud, Erikson was interested in
psychoanalytic work with children.
The basic difference between the first four and last four psychosocial stages is the
person’s control over the environment.
What is NOT a way Erikson’s theory differs from Freud’s?
importance of unconscious forces
Each of Erikson’s stages of life involves a
crisis
