Q

What does Erik Erickson suggest as the fourth stage of psychological development?

A

Industry vs. inferiority is the fourth stage of psychological development.

Competency is the basic virtue of this stage. This stage occurs at 5-12 years old.

Teachers and peers at school are very important at this stage. Children start to learn values that are highly valued by society and begin to develop them themselves. When they are successful at a certain value they feel good about themselves and gain confidence (at that skill). They gain confidence in their ability to achieve goals. If the reverse happens they feel inferior to others.

Q

What does Erik Erikson suggest as the fifth stage of psychological development?

A

Erik suggests identify vs role confusion is the fifth stage of moral development.

The basic virtue of this age is fidelity and occurs between 12-18 years old.

In this stage adolescents begin to think about who they are and what they can be. Role confusion can occur when individuals fail to establish a sense of identity in society. In response they may explore different lifestyles (work, education and politics for example). Pressuring someone into an identity can lead to the rebellion of a negative identity and unhappiness.
