Human development is governed by sequence of stages; development involves a series of conflicts and crises
Crisis
Turning point faced at each developmental stage
Basic strengths
Motivating characteristics and beliefs; derived from satisfactory resolution of the crisis at each developmental stage
Trust vs. Mistrust
Mouth is important
•result of trust is expecting consistency and continuity from others
•result of mistrust is suspicion, fear, and anxiety
Autonomy vs. Doubt and Shame
Children develop physical and mental abilities
•result of autonomy is child learning to exercise independence
•result of shame is self doubt
Initiative vs. Guilt
Desire to take initiative in activities
•result of initiative is awareness of permissible behavior and can be channeled toward realistic and socially acceptable goals
•result of guilt is self directed activities being affected
Industry vs. Inferiority
Child begins school and has new social experiences
•result of industriousness- praise and reinforcement lead to feelings of competence and encouragement
•result of inferiority- develops feelings of inadequacy
Identity Cohesion vs. Role Confusion
Forming ego identity

Self-image formed during adolescence; integrated ideas of what one is and what one wants to be
Identify crisis
From failure to achieve ego identity; result of strong sense of self; ability to face adulthood with certainty and confidence
Intimacy vs. Isolation
Individual begins to function as a mature, responsible, and independent adult
•result of intimacy- encompasses feelings of care and commitment
•result of isolation- failure of intimacy; avoidance, aggression, and rejection toward people
Generativista vs. Stagnation
Expression of generativity; failure results in stagnation, boredom, pseudo-intimacy, and childlike behaviors

Involved evaluations of one’s own life

Accepting one’s place and past
