Eric Birling Flashcards
Mysterious… and why?
‘Yes, I remember-‘
‘pale and distressed’
‘half-shy, half-assertive’
Mystery contrasts Mr/Mrs Birling’s straightforward capitalist views - his ambiguity gives the audience hope for a change
Ambiguity may also connect to fear of father’s disapproval
Controversial… and why?
‘Easily turns nasty’
‘Insisted on giving her money’’
‘Pretty and a good sport’
Men still had power so he may have used his power to justify his actions
Women were seen as objects/powerless and he abused this stereotype for his own benefit
Contrast to his father… and why?
‘Not the kind of father a chap can go to’
‘Could have kept her’
‘Letting ourselves out nicely’
The contrast shows the distinct theme of generational difference as Eric is more compassionate - reflects Priestley’s ideologies and hope for the newer generations
Central argument
Eric shows/gives the hope for change while also demonstrating the risk of society continuing this way
Conclusion
Priestly does this to give the audience hope for change and to also understand their responsibility
