1920 + 30s Project era
- people are together in institutionalized settings like cognitive disabilities or mental illness; keeping busy in institutions, not so much about group dynamics
1937-1953 Socialization era
-institutions start to evolve, groups are still happening in institutional and group settings, emergence of artistic efforts; OTs start to use the dynamics of the group for more positive things
1954-1961 Group dynamics-process era
-the rise of group dynamics in psychology and psychotherapy, we start to see that groups can be goal oriented, clients can learn from each other and about each other; more intentional use of others in the group
1962-1969 Psychodynamic era
-more freedom
1990-present
Wellness Era
-people are starting to direct their own therapy, asking them what are their goals, what do they want to achieve out of groups; more educational, exercise based, including the family, growing social supports
1970s to 90s
Adaptation era
-the use of groups for adaptation, using across health settings, see more emphasis on what patients can do for themselves, more evidence of skills
