Tactics used

A
  • Over the top - soldiers climbed out of trenches and over no-mans-land to the enemy
  • Gas attack - gas released for enemy to breathe in
  • Tank attack - tanks drove over no-mans-land and into enemy trenches
  • Artillery barrage - shells would be fired continuously at enemy trenches for a certain amount of time

Rent strikes

A

1915 Glasgow, affected women who were left behind by partners who went to war, people moved into Glasgow looking for jobs from countryside ,landlords increased rent, people refused to pay, women prevented others from being evicted by throwing food and blocking access from police

Effects of the Rent Strikes

  • 1919 Town Act:
    councils built houses and rented out cheaply
  • 1923 Chamberlain Act:
    private builders given money to build houses
  • 1924 Wheatly Act:
    gov. gave money to councils for every house built
  • 1930 Greenwood Act:
    gov. gave councils grants to demolish slums
