Weapons used
Lee Enfield rifle, Vickers machine gun, aircraft, heavy artillery, tanks
Tactics used
- Over the top - soldiers climbed out of trenches and over no-mans-land to the enemy
- Gas attack - gas released for enemy to breathe in
- Tank attack - tanks drove over no-mans-land and into enemy trenches
- Artillery barrage - shells would be fired continuously at enemy trenches for a certain amount of time
Diseases in the trenches
Trench foot, dysentery (intestines), shell shock
What is conscription
Introduced in 1916, men aged 18-51 forced to go to war
Defence of the Realms Act (DORA)
Introduced: BST, press control, couldn’t strike, blackouts, had to do any job requested by government
Conscientious Objectors (COs)
- Non-combatants - would go to war but wouldn’t fight, become stretcher bearers, doctors, etc.
- Alternatives - stay in Britain and help with war effort
- Absolutists - would do nothing at all to help war
Rationing
Introduced in 1918, sugar, flour, beer, and meat all first to be restricted, propaganda to encourage
Rent strikes
1915 Glasgow, affected women who were left behind by partners who went to war, people moved into Glasgow looking for jobs from countryside ,landlords increased rent, people refused to pay, women prevented others from being evicted by throwing food and blocking access from police
Effects of the Rent Strikes
- 1919 Town Act:
councils built houses and rented out cheaply - 1923 Chamberlain Act:
private builders given money to build houses - 1924 Wheatly Act:
gov. gave money to councils for every house built - 1930 Greenwood Act:
gov. gave councils grants to demolish slums
Changing role of women
Worked in factories, farms, military, hospitals due to men fighting in the war
Representation of the People’s Act
- 1918 - women 30+ could vote if owned property or married to man who did
- 1928 - everyone 21+ could vote
Suffragists
wanted vote for women
peaceful organisation:
- marches, posters, discussions
achieved vote by:
- maturity, dedication, intelligence, gaining respect from MPs and men
Suffragettes
wanted vote for women
formed 1903
violent group
achieved vote by:
- hunger strikes in prison, violent protests, violent acts against MPs
