Era Of Andrew Jackson Flashcards

1
Q

Indian removal

A

First major legislative departure from the US policy of officially respecting the legal and political rights of the American Indians. The act authorized the president to grant Indian tribes unsettled western prairies land in exchange for their desirable territories within state borders (especially in the southeast), from which the tribes would be removed. The rapid settlement of land east of the Mississippi River made it clear by the mid 1820s that white man would not tolerate the presence of even peaceful Indians there

Q

Nullification crisis

A

Was a conflict between the US state of South Carolina and the federal government of the United states in 1832-33. It was driven by South Carolina politician John C. Calhoun, who opposed the federal imposition of the tariffs of 1828 and 1832 and argued that the U.S. constitution gave states the right to block the enforcement of a federal law. In November 1832 South Carolina adopted the ordinance of nullification, declaring the tariffs null, void, and non-binding in the state. US president Andrew Jackson responded in December 1832 by issuing a proclamation that asserted the supremacy of the federal government

Q

Jackson’s justification for Indian removal

A

Signs the Indian removal act into law. The bill enabled the federal government to negotiate with southeastern Native American tribes for their ancestral land in states such as Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee m. As a result, some 60,000 Native Americans were forced westward into “Indian territory” (present Oklahoma). The mass migration resulted in more than 4,000 deaths and became known as the trail of tears

Democracy

A

Is a system of government in which laws, policies, leadership, and major undertakings of a state or other polity are directly or indirectly decided by the “people” a group historically constituted by only a minority of the population (all free adult males in ancient Athens or all sufficiently propertied adult males in 19th-century Britain) but generally understood since the mid-20th century to include all (or nearly all) adult citizens.

Banking crisis

A

Was the political struggle that ensued over the fate of the second bank of the United States during the presidency of Andrew Jackson. In 1832, Jackson vetoed a bill to recharger the bank, and began a campaign that would eventually lead to its destruction. For decades afterward, the U.S. treasury system would go through several iterations until the federal Reserve was created in 1914

Q

Five tribes

A

The term five civilized tribes was applied by European Americans in the colonial and early federal period in the history of the United States to the five major Native American nations in the southeast, the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee (formerly called “creek”) and Seminoles. Americans of European descent classified them as “civilized” because they had adopted attributes of the Anglo-American culture
