Equipment Overview Flashcards
Which model of CD turntable was the first attempt at DJing with CDs by Pioneer?
CDJ -500
What was one of the main features that made the CDJ-1000 become the industry standard DJ console compared to previous models?
You had a substantial platter that could be used to scratch from an optical drive (CD) just like a vinyl turntable
What were the three main features that arrived with the CDJ-2000 that gave much greater control to the DJ?
Using a USB input to enable the use of a USB pendrive to import and mix tracks from; the ability to quantise and key-lock (Master Tempo) whilst changing tempo; the introduction and development of Rekordbox software for building, storing and exporting libraries and sets
Explain the ‘Fader Start’ function available on some Pioneer Mixers
The crossfader can be used to trigger the cue point selected on the deck which is activated for Control mode. Also available through ethernet (Link) with the NXS range
What is the difference between Line Input and Digital input ?
Each Line input is a mono signal (I.e. L or R), whereas each digital input is a stereo signal (L AND R)
What is the difference between the USB and Ethernet connectors on the back of a CDJ ?
The USB connector allows the user to control Rekordbox directly within the software, whereas the Ethernet connector is used to Link multiple CDJs and a mixer together for shared functionality and synchronization
Describe which section of the DJM would NOT be synchronized if the CDJs were only connected to each other (via a single Ethernet cable) and why
The FX section of the DJM would not be synchronized with the current track as the mixer would not have access to the CDJs’ beat grids
What is the function/benefit of connecting one CDJ to another via a single Ethernet cable?
Tracks and Rekordbox data contained on a USB stick connected to one of the CDJs can be accessed by both CDJs
Why do the Master 1 outputs (to be connected to the club PA) need to be connected using balanced cables?
The cables will be covering a relatively large distance across the club and potentially passing digital devices, therefore a balanced cable must be used to screen the signal from outside interference that could be introduced.
Why is an unbalanced cable preferred when covering very short distances?
Unbalanced cables provide a stronger ‘purer’ signal due to their lack of shielding
What is the difference between RCA and S/PDIF cables?
RCA cables carry an analogue, mono signal, whereas S/PDIF cables carry a digital, stereo signal
What is the difference between RCA and ADAT connectors when using an optical cable?
RCA connectors can only transfer 2 channels of digital audio, whereas ADAT can carry 8 channels of digital audio
What is the most commonly used mode for the crossfader curve and why?
DJs most commonly use the sharpest setting for crossfader in order to perform scratching and cutting, and they use the channel volume sliders for transitions and fades.
-CDJ-3000- What happens if you press the ‘CUE’ button when the track is paused ?
You create a new CUE point a the current position
-CDJ-3000- Why would you use the ‘Search’ buttons and not the jog wheel?
To move through the track more quickly
