There are three depressions on the palmar aspect of the 2nd metacarpal bone, and this point is located at the level of the second depression.

ST 35 (Lateral XIYAN, Lateral Eye of the Knee) In the large depression ventral to the ventral border of the patella and between the middle and lateral patellar ligaments. ST 35 and medial XIYAN together make up the traditional point, XIYAN (Knee Eyes).

ST 36 (Master Point of Abdomen and Gastrointestinal System) In the depression just lateral to the tibial crest, in the muscular groove between the tibialis cranialis and long digital extensor mm., 2 cun distal to the proximal edge of the tibial crest. An alternate location would be as in the canine, which puts it in the middle of the muscle belly of the tibialis cranialis, but due to the lack of acceptance by the horse, the above location is used. The direction of needle insertion for this point is craniolateral to caudomedial, while that for the alternate point is cranial to caudal; thus both insertions arrive at the same point.

ST 40 (Influential Point for Phlegm) In the depression in the muscular groove between the long and lateral digital extensor muscles, 8 cun proximal to the most lateral prominence of the lateral malleolus of the tibia. This is halfway between the large depression ventral to the ventral border of the patella and between the middle and lateral patellar ligaments (ST 35) and the most lateral prominence of the lateral malleolus of the tibia.

SP 6 (Master Point of Caudal Abdomen and Urogenital System) In the depression 3 cun proximal to the most medial prominence of the medial malleolus of the tibia, just caudal to the caudal border of the tibia, and dorsal to the combined heads of the deep digital flexor muscle: tibialis caudalis and lateral digital flexor (flexor digiti I longus) mm. This point is usually located just distal to where the saphenous vein crosses the caudal border of the tibia. Since the fibula does not exist at this location in the horse, SP 6 is located opposite GB 39 on the lateral aspect of the leg.

IVAS POINT LOCATION: In the depression on the medial surface of the radius, just cranial to the cranial border of the flexor carpi ulnaris m., at the level of the dorsal aspect of the accessory carpal bone (superficial location), with the deeper location between the flexor carpi ulnaris and superficial digital flexor mm. Needle insertion is at a 90 degree angle to the skin surface. ALTERNATE LOCATION: In the depression on the caudal aspect of the carpus where the two tendons of insertion of the extensor carpi ulnaris depart from one another, just proximal to the dorsal aspect of the accessory carpal bone. This depression can best be felt with the carpus in flexion. Needle insertion is at a 90 degree angle to the skin surface.
