An alternate location would be as in the canine, which puts it in the middle of the muscle belly of the tibialis cranialis, but due to the lack of acceptance by the horse, the above location is used. The direction of needle insertion for this point is craniolateral to caudomedial, while that for the alternate point is cranial to caudal; thus both insertions arrive at the same point.

This point is usually located just distal to where the saphenous vein crosses the caudal border of the tibia. Since the fibula does not exist at this location in the horse, SP 6 is located opposite GB 39 on the lateral aspect of the leg.

Needle insertion is at a 90 degree angle to the skin surface. ALTERNATE LOCATION: In the depression on the caudal aspect of the carpus where the two tendons of insertion of the extensor carpi ulnaris depart from one another, just proximal to the dorsal aspect of the accessory carpal bone. This depression can best be felt with the carpus in flexion. Needle insertion is at a 90 degree angle to the skin surface.
