Equine PGE Flashcards
What is the common name for the large strongyle worms that effect horses?
Large Redworms
Can you describe the morphology of a large redworm?
1.5-5cm long, large buccal cavity, male bursa visible to naked eye. Double row of leaf crowns.
Can you list the main four large redworms?
Strongylus vulgaris. Strongylus Edentatus. Strongylus Equinus. Triodontophorus
How does the life cycle of tridontophorus differ dramatically from the others?
non - migratory
Briefly give an overview of the lifecycle of strongylus vulgaris
Penetrates mucosa of intestinal tract. Swims to anterior mesenteric, grows there then travels back to intestines.
What is the lifecycle of strongylus edentus?
Penetrates intestinal tract muscosa. Travels up hepatic artery to liver. Forms nodules then travels back to intestines.
What is the lifecycle of strongylus equinus?
penetrates intestinal mucosa then travels through peritoneum to liver. Then back to intestines.
What pathogenic effects can these worms have on the small intestine?
They penetrate mucosa leaving ulcers and larvae can damage arteries.
What is the life cycle of small redworms?
L3 is ingested and invades mucosa. l4 emerge into guy lumen and mature. ppp = 8-12 weeks
What kind of nematode is the Parascaris Equorum?
Ascarid
Where can Parascaris Equorum be found?
Small intestine.
What is the basic lifecyle of the Parascaris Equorum worm?
Direct. Ingested. Liver - Heart- Lung- Intestines.
What type of nematode is the strongyloides westeri worm?
Rhabditoid
What sex of strongyloides westeri is parasitic?
Females
What is significant about the strongyloides westeri life cycle?
It can be free living or parasitic
