Equilibrium/Energetics Flashcards
Closed system
a natural physical system that does not allow transfer of matter in or out of the system
Irreversible reaction
a reaction where the end products are not able to revert back to how they were
Reversible reaction
a reaction where the end products are able to revert back to how they were
Dynamic equilibrium
when a balance is reached between the amount of reactants and products present, the reaction has reached dynamic equilibrium
Chatelier’s principle
If a change is made in a closed system, the equilibrium will shift in away to reduce the effect of the change
The effect of pressure on equilibrium
Increasing pressure shifts the position of equilibrium in a direction of less moles (to the right)
Decrease is opposite
Bond energies
Breaking bonds need energy
Making bonds releases energy
How to find enthalpy change
Energy taken in - energy released
The effect of temperature on equilibrium
If the temperature increased the reaction would shift in a direction where it is endothermic (to the left)
Decreasing the temperature would shift the reaction in a direction where it is exothermic (to the right)
