Equilibrium and Rates Flashcards
What is Activation Energy?
The minimum amount of energy particles in a reaction need to react
What is a Catalyst?
A substance that changes the rate of a chemical reaction but is itself unchanged at the end of the process. (Takes different pathway where reactants require less energy to react)
What is Le Chatelier’s principle?
When there is a change of a condition in a system, it will shift the equilibrium to counteract the change.
What are the two ways to calculate rate?
Rate = Quantity of reactant used/time taken
Rate = Quantity of products formed/ time taken
What factors affect rate of reaction?
Temperature
Catalyst
Concentration (aq)
Surface Area (s)
Pressure (g)
What is Collision Theory?
For a reaction to occur, the reacting particles must collide with one another. The rate of the reaction depends on the frequency of collisions.
When is equilibrium reached?
Forward and reverse reactions in a reversible reactions occur exactly at the same rate.
How can you change the direction in a reversible reaction?
By changing the conditions.
What happens if you increase concentration of reactants?
More products will be formed.
