Equilibrium Flashcards
Equilibrium constant Kc
Kc = [products at their orders] / [reactants at their orders]
Kc values guide
Kc = 1 means that the position of equilibrium is halfway between reactants and products.
Kc > 1 means that equilibrium is towards the products
Kc < 1 means that equilibrium is towards the reactants.
Types of equilibria
Homogenous
Heterogenous
What does heterogenous equilibrium contain?
Species in different states and phases, however the Kc equation only includes the ones that are gases or aqueous.
What does homogenous equilibrium contain?
All species are the same and gases.
Equilibrium constant Kp
Kp = p(products)^m / p(reactants)^n
Partial pressure
The contribution of a gas towards the total pressure.
p(X) = mole fraction of X * total pressure
Mole fraction
mole fraction (X) = number of moles of X / total number of moles
Effects on Kp with changing temperature
Exothermic: Increasing temp => Kp decreases Decreasing temp => Kp increases Endothermic Increasing temperature => Kp increases Decreasing temperature => Kp decreases
