Equilibrium Flashcards
What is equilibrium?
Balance between forward and backwards reactions, concentration remains constant.
What is the Haber Process equation?
N2 + 3H2 –> 2NH3
What does exothermic mean?
Releasing heat during a reaction.
What is the equilibrium constant?
Expression of the ratio of product to reactant concentrations at equilibrium Kc.
What is homogeneous equilibrium?
Equilibrium where all reactants and products are in the same phase.
What is the Kc equation?
[products]/[reactants]
What happens if there’s an increase in concentration of the reactants?
It will shift to the right to oppose the change.
What happens if pressure is decreased?
Shift to the side with the most molecules to oppose the change.
What happens if the temperature is increased?
Shifts to the endothermic side to oppose the change.
How does a catalyst affect equilibrium?
Has no effect on the yield or position of equilibrium, it increases the rate of both forward and backwards reactions equally.
What are the units of [x][y]/[z][v]2?
mol -1 dm 3
What is Le Chatelier’s Principle?
Equilibrium will shift to oppose any change.
What conditions are needed to reach equilibrium?
A closed system.
What is Kc affected by?
Temperature only.
What happens to the Kc expression if temperature is increased?
Top part of the expression becomes smaller and the bottom becomes larger so the Kc value decreases.
