Equilibrium Flashcards

1
Q

What is meant by dynamic equilibrium?

A

A reversible reaction in a closed system which is stable under fixed conditions but is sensitive to changes in temperature, pH and pressure. The rates of the forward and backward reaction are equal and the concentrations of the reactants and products stay constant

Q

What is meant by heterogeneous equilibrium? (2)

A

Equilibrium species have different states.

- Usually don’t count anything but gasses

Q

Why is it that in heterogeneous equilibrium, we only use gasses for Kc and Kp?

A

In equilibrium, the concentrations of solids and liquids are essentially constant

Q

What is meant by the mole fraction (x) of a gas?

A

Under the same conditions of temperature and pressure, the same volume of gas contains the same number of gas molecules. The sum of all mole fractions in a mixture must equal 1

Q

How do you calculate mole fraction (x) of A?

A

Mole fraction x(A)= no. moles of A ÷ total no. moles in gas mixture
