Equilibria Flashcards
What is dynamic equilibrium?
When the rate of the forward reaction is the same as the backward reaction, there is no change in te amount of reactants or products
What is Le Chatelier’s Principle?
Whatever you do to the equilibrium, it will do the opposite
What can change the position of equilibrium?
Temperature and pressure changes
A system tries to get hot?
Reducing temperature favours the exothermic reaction
A system tries to cool down?
Increasing temperature favours the endothermic
Forward reaction =?
Exothermic
Backward reaction =?
Endothermic
More moles =?
Less moles =?
Higher pressure
Lower pressure
If pressure increases?
The low pressure side is favoured therefore the equilibria moves right to left
> pressure =?
< pressure =?
= equilibria <
= equilibria >
Eg: 2SO2 + O2 <> 2SO3 |\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_| |\_\_\_\_\_| 3 moles 2 moles High Low Pressure Pressure
Pressure goes down, the high pressure side is favoured, therefore the equilibrium moves left to right (high to low)
