EQUATIONS OF MOTION Flashcards
Equation for speed:
speed = distance/time
Equation for average speed:
average speed = total distance/total time
Equation for acceleration:
acceleration = final speed-initial speed/time
Equation for displacement/distance:
displacement = (final speed+initial speed/2) x time
What is Newton’s first law of motion?
An object will remain at rest or will move at a constant velocity unless an external force acts on it.
What is Newton’s second law of motion?
The resultant force of an object is proportional to the acceleration.
What is the equation for resultant force:
force = mass x acceleration
What is the equation for weight:
weight = mass x gravitational field strength
What is Hooke’s law
To obey Hooke’s law, the force must be proportional to the extension.
What does Newton’s third law of motion state?
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
What is the equation relating force, extension and spring constant:
force = extension x spring constant
What is the equation to calculate a moment:
moment = force x distance from pivot
How do you calculate an unknown moment from a system in equilibrium?
total clockwise moment = total anticlockwise moment
What is the equation for final speed:
final speed^2 = initial speed^2 + 2(acceleration x displacement)
