Equations and Inequalities with the Variable on Both Sides Flashcards
What is a solution?
a valuable of the variable that makes an equation true
What is an integer?
the set of all whole numbers and their opposites
What is an algebraic expression?
An expression that contains at least one variable
What is a variable?
a quantity that may be changed according to the mathematical problem (for example, x in x + 5 = 10)
What is a coefficient?
the number that is multiplied by the variable in an algebraic expression (for example, 2x + 6x + 14, and 2 and 6 are coefficients)
What is a constant?
A value that does not change
What is an inequality?
A mathematical sentence that shows the relationship between quantities that are not equal
What is a rational number?
a number that can be expressed as the ratio of two integers
What are operations?
Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
What is a common denominator?
a denominator that you can reach by both denominators. For example in the problem 3/4+ 5/6 a common denominator is 12 because it is the lowest number that both 4 and 6 can reach by multiplying with whole numbers
What is the lowest common denominator?
the smallest number divisible by all denominators of the given set of fractions. For example: For the fractions 3/5 and 2/7 , the least common denominator is 35.
What is a transformation?
a function that describes a change in the position, size or shape of a figure
What is a reflection?
a transformation that flips a figure across a line
What is a translation?
a function that slides a figure along a straight line
what is a preimage?
the input of a transformation
What is an image?
the output of a transformation
What is a line of reflection?
a fixed line that flips a shape across itself so that each point on the shape is the same distance from the line as its reflected point
What is center of rotation?
the point about which a shape can be rotated to achieve symmetry
What is a coordinate plane?
a graphing and description system for points and lines. A vertical (y) axis and a horizontal (x) axis make up the coordinate plane. There are four quadrants in the coordinate plane. The point where these lines connect is called the origin (0, 0)
What is a quadrilateral?
a two-dimensional, closed shape with four sides, four angles, and four vertices
What is a parallelogram?
shapes that have four sides with two pairs of sides that are parallel. The four shapes that meet the requirements of a parallelogram are square, rectangle, rhombus, and rhomboid
What is a rhombus?
A rhombus looks like a slanted square; a diamond-shaped quadrilateral that has all four sides equal
What is a trapezoid?
quadrilaterals that have two parallel sides and two non-parallel sides
