Definition of holistic
The whole person
Definition of equality
A person is respected as an individual, treated fairly, given the same opportunities regardless of differences, treated according to needs
What is socialisation?
When the values and norms of the society in which a person is being brought up in becomes the accepted way (learning from others)
What is discrimination?
Considering a race or culture of a person or type of person to be less of a value than ones own or to deliberately act against a group of people or to favour own group above another
What is direct discrimination?
Talking to or acting towards a person disrespectfully face to face
What is indirect discrimination?
Excluding an individual in a less obvious way, sometimes done unintentionally occurs when a condition is made harder for one group to meet than another
When is discrimination not discrimination?
Reasonable adjustments are made, certain disabilities as a building cant be adapted to every one, certain job roles, sport teams
What is institutional discrimination?
Refers to a form of discrimination which occurs specifically in institutions such as public bodies or corporations
Definition of prejudice
To pre judge someone
Definition of stereotype
To label a group of people the same characteristic
What are the bases of discrimination?
Race, culture, disability, social class, age, gender, sexual orientation and religion
Definition of labelling
Labelling someone is putting them into a certain category based on looks or what you have heard about them, judging them before you know them
Definition of bullying
Seeking to harm or intimidate
Example of racist direct discrimination
In a hospital a doctor refusing treatment to a patient because of their race
Example of sexist indirect discrimination
A workplace not giving a job to a woman because of her gender
