Who were the suffragettes?
The suffragettes were a group that resulted in extreme tactics to get their word around about equal rights.
Who were the suffragists?
The suffragists were a group that resulted in less extreme tactics to get their word around about equal rights. They did things like holding meetings, writing letters to Parliament, went on protest marches, and produced posters of their own.
What were the kind of things that the suffragettes did?
They disrupted political meetings, chained themselves to railings in Downing Street, pelted politicians with eggs and flour and smashed Parliament’s windows with stones. They also set fire to churches and railway stations and poured acid on golf courses.
What happened to the suffragettes when they were arrested?
They refused to eat and went on hunger strikes, which resulted to them being force fed.
Who was Emily Davison?
She was a suffragette that jumped in front of a horse during a horse race and killed herself to get her point through to the people.
What was the role of women during the Great War?
The women were responsible for becoming things like bus drivers , police officers, car mechanics, and road menders. Thousands of women worked in munitions factories.
When did women gain the right to vote?
In 1918 the Parliament changed the voting laws and gave all men over the age of 21 and all women over the age of 30 the right to vote, (as long as they owned their own land or were married to a man who did). Some people argued that this wasn’t enough, while others said it was a move in the right direction. Eventually, in 1928, Parliament reduced the voting age for women to 21, regardless of whether they owned a house or were married.
When was slavery abolished in the USA?
1865.
What were the Jim Crow laws?
The Jim Crow laws were laws that kept black and white people seperately.
Who were the Klu Klux Klan?
The Klu Klux Klan were a racist terrorist group who targeted certain people because of their ethnicity or religion. They lynched people because of who they were.
What does lynching mean?
When people were killed by hanging without a trial.
Who was Rosa Parks?
Rosa Parks was a black civilian that refused to give up her seat for a white passenger in the coloured section of the bus.
Who were the Little Rock Nine?
They were the first African-Americans to attend Little Rock’s Central High. When they walked to the school they were bombarded with racial abuse and discrimination, and people were discriminating them inside of school. This was when black people and white people were able to go to a mixed school.
