One of most significant IGOs in the world, est 1945, 193 countries involved (2016)
When does the UN do for countries?
Is a forum for member nations to express opinions and grievances, ask/offer assistance, propose actions to resolve
What are the threats to the UN?
the leaders are not as economically/militarily powerful as they once were (UK/USA/France), emerging powers to have more say (BRIC)
Which member states do not have a seat at the top table of world security decision making?
Africa and Latin America, despite their combined pop of 1.5BN
What does global security consist of?
Political (UN security council & UN peacekeeper), economic (IMF), social (World Health Org) and judicial (Intl Court of Justice and Intl Criminal Law) interest
List some examples of stability in the UN
WHO, FAO, WFP (world food programme) have reduced burden of disease and hunger, intl law obeyed by many countries
What happened in 2016?
16 UN peacekeeping missions deployed around the world, made up of military personal from every member state
Who are the 5 permanent member states of the UN security council?
USA, Russia, China, France, UK
Who are the largest contributors to peacekeeping missions?
Indonesia, India, Nigeria & Egypt
