EQ1 Flashcards
Four types of shores
off shore, near shore, foreshore, back shore
What beach type does constructive and destructive waves make?
Shallow and steep
When are the beaches steeper?
In the winter as more destructive waves
When are the beaches more shallow?
Summer as more constructive waves
How does geoglogy affect the steepness?
Shingle rock and constructive waves cause a very steep beach as the material is deposited at the back.
Sand and constructive waves= not as steep beach
Shingle rock destructive= very shallow
Sand constructive= Shallow
What are swell waves?
Waves that are without wind so small.
What is a plunging wave?
It’s affected by a sudden change in seabed? E.g. a sandbar
What changes everyday?
Plunging waves or swell waves
What changes overtime?
Global warming and reduction is river sediment due to dams
Discordant coastline?
It has alternating bands of hard and soft rock. The rivers have eroded the soda rock causing v shaped valleys and then srl so bays have formed.
What’s happening to bays now?
They are filling up and the headlands absorb most of the energy and therefore sediment gets transported into the bay
What is a Dalmatian coastline?
Layered rock has been folded by tectonic cavity leading anti-clines and sync-clines. The sync-clines were eroded by rivers making them deeper where as anti-climes were eroded due to sub-aerial weathering which makes it look like we see one band of rock
What is a haff coastline?
When sediment from the coastline is transported by the waves and deposited in a off-shore creating a bar
How is a raised beach formed?
When the ice melted(sea level change)it caused some parts of the uk to go down making other parts to go up(isostatic rebound). This is replaced with isostatic rebound which is gradual changes in the lands up and down movement.
What is a Ria?
Drowned river valley (v shaped)
