EQ 2.5 Flashcards
1
Q
Glacier movement
A
-Gravity is the fundamental reason for ice movement as a result of ice mass building up in the accumulation zone
2
Q
Faster ice movement
A
-As a result of the increasing weight, the shear stress increases as the slope angle increases which would lead to cause the ice to overcome the forces of ice strength and friction
3
Q
Temperate glaciers
A
- The base is warmer than the melting point of ice
- It’s wamer because if the friction caused by the glacier moving and geothermal heat from the earth
- The ice at the bottom of the glacier melts and at 0 degrees c the ice at the surface melts leading to the the meltwater joins the meltwater stream at the bottom of the glacier acting as a lubricant
4
Q
Polar glaciers
A
- The base is cold so there is little melting
- The ice is frozen to the base of the valley, so there’s very little movement
- There’s hardly any melting at the surface either, even in the summer. This means cold, based glaciers don’t cause much erosion at all
5
Q
Basal sliding
A
-The meltwater acts a lubricant reducing friction with both the entrained debris with the underlying bedrock (75% of glacier movement in Temperate glaciers)
6
Q
Regelation creep
A
-
