Epoc&energy systems Flashcards
What does EPOC stand for?
Excessive Pose-Exercise Oxygen Consumption
What is the first stage called? What are the parts of it?
Alactacid dept (fast stage)
- Replenishing PC and ATP
- Replenishing myoglobin
Outline the replenishing of PC and ATP
- done by aerobic system taking 4 litres of oxygen after exercise
- takes 2-3 minutes
What is myoglobin and what is it’s function?
- protein found in sarcoplasm
- helps transfer O2 from bloodstream to mitochondria
Outline the replenishing of myoglobin
- higher level of breathing & heart rate to replace O2
- takes between 1-2 minutes
What is the second stage and what is involved
Lactacid dept (slow stage) -removing lactic acid
Outline removing of lactic acid
-takes up to an hour
-achieved by:
•60% converted into pyruvic acid and taken to Krebs cycle by Acetyl CoA
•converted into glucose
•converted into proteins
•removed via sweat and urine
What are the other recovery processes?
Replenishing glycogen:
-eat food high in carbs
-can take up to 48 hours for heavy exercise
Removal of CO2:
-70% removed by blood plasma
-heart & breathing rate remain high to expel CO2
Outline ATP-PC system
ATP -ATPase—>ADP + Pi
PC—>Pi + C + Creatine Kinase—> energy
Energy + Pi + ADP —> ATP
Outline lactic acid system
Glycogen -glycogen phosphorylase->glucose
Glucose -PFK->Pyruvic acid—>energy
Pyruvic acid -LDH-> lactic acid
What are the three stages of the aerobic energy system?
- Aerobic glycolysis
- Krebs cycle
- Electron transport chain
Outline stage 1 of aerobic energy system
Glycogen -glycogen phosphorylase-> glucose
Glucose -PFK->Pyruvic acid
Pyruvic acid + coenzyme A —> acetyl CoA
Outline stage 2 of aerobic energy system
Acetyl CoA + oxaloacetic acid —> citric acid
Citric acid—> Krebs cycle
Krebs cycle ->CO2 produced & reduced -> hydrogen atoms produced -> 2 ATP -> regeneration of oxaloacetic acid
Outline 3rd stage of aerobic energy system
Hydrogen atoms + NAD+FAD —> NADH+FADH
NADH+FADH ->electron transport chain
34ATP & H2O released
