Epithial Tissues Flashcards
Group of cells performing specialized structural and functional roles together
Tissues
4 major types of tissues
Epithelial, connective, muscle, and nerve
Covers all free body surfaces inside and out
Epithelial tissue
What is the major type of gland?
Epithelial tissue
What do epithelial tissues lack?
Blood vessels
How is epithelial tissue anchored to connective tissue?
Basement membrane
Since epithelial lacks blood vessels it is nourished by substances that what from underlying connective tissues?
Diffuse
Do epithelial tissue reproduce well?
Yes they can heal rapidly
What are the 5 functions of epithelial tissue?
Secretion, protection, sensory receptors, absorption, excretion
Which type of epithelial tissue is a single layer of thin flattened cells?
Simple squamous epithelial
Describe the nuclei in simple cuboidal epithelial tissue..
Spherical and centrally located
2 similarities of simple columnar and pseudo stratified columnar
Both elongated & both have goblet cells
2 differences between pseudo stratified and stratified columnar
Pseudo has cilia while simple columnar has micro villi, and simple columnar nuclei is located near the basement membrane while pseudo has nuclei that is located at 2 or more leveled within the cells
Stratified squamous protects what?
Underlying cells
Skin cells age and accumulate a protein called what?
Keratin
In glandular epithelial exocrine secrete into what?
ducts
In glandular epithelial endocrine secret into what?
Body fluids or blood
