Epithelium Flashcards
Transcytosis (transcellular)
Ions and stuff passing through epithelial cells
Paracellular pathway
Ions and stuff passing between the cells through tight junctions
Classification of epithelium is defined by:
Shape of cell at the surface of the epithelial layer (lining the lumen)
Mucus glands
Secrete thick, sticky stuff
Appear pale on staining
Serous glands
Secrete thin, watery stuff
Appear dark on staining
Goblet cells
Unicellular glands
Multicellular glands
Composed of many cells
Exocrine glands
Have duct system, can be branched or not
Endocrine glands
Don’t have duct system, empty straight into bloodstream.
Basement membrane
Provides attachment for epithelial cells
Consists of two components, basal lamina and reticular lamina
(Lamina Lucida may be an artifact)
Basal lamina (aka lamina densa)
Type IV collagen
Reticular lamina
type III collagen
Sits below the lamina densa, further away from the epithelial cell
True cilia
Orderly arrangement and synchronized movement
9+2 micro tubule pairing
Dynein motor protein uses ATP cleavage to produce energy and move
Move mucus out of lungs
Flagella are motile tail of sperm
Defect leads to bad lungs and infertility (Cystic fibrosis)
Microvilli
Cap luminal surface of intestinal cells
Increase surface area for absorption
Core of actin filaments
Villain anchors actin filaments at the tip
Stereocilia
Actually are long Microvilli, actin filaments core
Only found in three places: epididymis, ductus deferens, inner ear
Connected by cytoplasmic bridges
