Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
Classified by two things:
shape & number of cell layers
what shapes can epithelial be?
squamous, cuboidal, or columnar
what about layers?
simple is one; stratified is more than one
Simple Squamous function
filtration, diffusion, osmosis; covers surfaces
Simple Squamous shape
single layer of thin, flattened cells; tightly packed; thin nuclei
Simple Cuboidal function
protection, secretion
Simple Cuboidal shape
single layer of cube shaped cells with centrally located nuclei
Simple Cuboidal is found where?
lines kidney tubules, covers ovaries, and the ducts of some glands
Simple Squamous is found where?
lungs, lines blood, lymph vessels and cavities
Simple Columnar function
protection, secretion, and absorption
Simple Columnar shape
one row of tall, elongated cells with nuclei toward the bottom; may have microvilli
Simple Columnar may be…
ciliated/nonciliated
Ciliated Simple Columnar
cilia is long extensions from the free surface of cells’ they beat in a certain direction to move cells/mucus
ciliated are found in the uterine tubes (help move egg towards uterus)
Unciliated Simple Columnar
line the uterus, stomach, and intestines
protect underlying tissues, discrete digestive fluids, and absorb nutrients
Goblet cells
