Q

What are the characteristics of the epithelial tissue

A
  • Is Avascular/ Nonvascular means that there is a lack of blood flow to the epithelial tissue
  • Lack of extracellular matrix which surrounds most cells has specialized cell contacts which connect adjacent cells
  • have 3 layers have a lateral surface ( between cells) Basement membrane and the apical side Are polar basal side bottom facing basal membrane apical side up
  • Regeneration
    able to replace old tissue.

Q

What are the functions of the epithelial cell

A
  1. Protection against abrasion and desiccation
  2. Barrier
prevents substances such as water from leaving the cell
  3. Absorbing
epithelial cells have carrier protiens for absorption
  4. Secretion
concerning the mucous, sweat and enzyme secreting portions of the pancreas

Q

What are the 2 ways we can classify epithelial cells

A

We classify epithelial cells according to the number of layers of cells there are and the shape of the cell

Q

There are names and descriptions for the structure concerning the number of layers

A

Simple - one layer
Stratified - more than one layer
Pseudostratified - looks like more than one layer but is just one layer
Transitional - has more than one like stratified in different shapes such as Cuboidal Columnar and when stretched squamous

Q

What is a simple cuboidal cell and what is its function/

A

One layer thick of cuboid looking cells

function: in the kidneys and allows for absorption and secretion.

Q

What is the transitional epithelium and what is its function

A

has more than one layer of the cell, it has different shapes example when stretched the cells appear squamous when not stretched they appear cuboidal or columnar

function: protect against caustic effects of urine and accommodates the fluctuations of fluid in organs
