Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
What is epithelial tissue?
It is what covers and protects the surface of both the inside and outside of the body
What are the characteristics of the epithelial tissue
- Is Avascular/ Nonvascular means that there is a lack of blood flow to the epithelial tissue
- Lack of extracellular matrix which surrounds most cells has specialized cell contacts which connect adjacent cells
- have 3 layers have a lateral surface ( between cells) Basement membrane and the apical side Are polar basal side bottom facing basal membrane apical side up
- Regeneration
able to replace old tissue.
What are the functions of the epithelial cell
- Protection against abrasion and desiccation
- Barrier
prevents substances such as water from leaving the cell - Absorbing
epithelial cells have carrier protiens for absorption - Secretion
concerning the mucous, sweat and enzyme secreting portions of the pancreas
What are the 2 ways we can classify epithelial cells
We classify epithelial cells according to the number of layers of cells there are and the shape of the cell
There are names and descriptions for the structure concerning the number of layers
Simple - one layer
Stratified - more than one layer
Pseudostratified - looks like more than one layer but is just one layer
Transitional - has more than one like stratified in different shapes such as Cuboidal Columnar and when stretched squamous
What are the names and descriptions of different shapes of the epithelial cell
Squamous -flat
Cuboidal - in a cuboid shape
Columnar- in a tall rectuangular shape
What are the different types of Simple epithelial cells
Simple Squamous
Simple Cuboidal
Simple Columnar
What is a simple squamous cell and what is its function
has one layer of cell and has flat cells
function: to allow diffusion filtrartion and some secretion
What is a simple cuboidal cell and what is its function/
One layer thick of cuboid looking cells
function: in the kidneys and allows for absorption and secretion.
What is the simple columnar epithelial cell and its functiom
Is one layer thick and has tall column looking cells
function: movement of particles especially in the bronchioles
What are the different types of stratified cells?
Stratified Squamous
Stratified Columnar
Stratified Cuboidal
What is the stratified squamous and what is the function?
Has more than 1 layer amd has flat cells
Function: protection against abrasion and barrier against infection
What is the stratified cuboidal epithelial cell and what is the function?
Has more than 1 layer and cells are in a cuboid shape
function: Secretion absorption protection against infection
What is the stratified columnar epithelial cell and what is the function?
Has more than one layer and cells are in a tall column shape
function: Protection and secretion
What is the pseudostratified columnar cell and what is the function?
One layer of tall column-shaped cells
function: synthesizes and secretes mucus on the upper free surface found on trachea bronchi lining of nasal cavity etc.
