Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
Where do the EPITHELIAL TISSUES LINE?
Parts of the body that are in contact with air
What is the function of the ALVEOLI?
Exchanging CO2 from blood into the air and O2 from the air into blood
How is GAS EXCHANGE increased by cells lining ALVEOLI?
Contains squamous epithelial cell. They allow diffusion to take place quickly because they are thin
How is GAS EXCHANGE increased by cells lining ALVEOLI?
Contains squamous epithelial cell. They allow diffusion to take place quickly because they are thin
What are the features of squamous epithelial cells?
- They are thin which allows substances to move through fast
- They are squashed
What are the features of columnar cells?
- They produce things for the tissue
- They are in columns
What are the function of goblet cells? (Columnar)
They release music which traps any pathogens/dust
What are the function of ciliates epithelial cells?
Are hairlike structures which move mucus up towards the mouth
What does COPD stand for?
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
When does COPD occur?
When the alveoli surface is damaged
What increases the risk of COPD?
Cigarettes
What are the effects of COPD?
- Thicker alveoli walls
- More mucus secretion
- Loss of elasticity in alveoli walls
- Burst alveoli reducing surface area of lungs
