Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
Stratified Squamous
Lines esophagus, mouth, and vagina
Protects against abrasion
Stratified Cuboidal
Sweat glands, salivary glands, and mammary glands
Protective tissue
Stratified columnar
Male urethra and ducts of some glands
Secretes and protects
Transitional
Lines the bladder, urethra, and ureters
Allows urinary organs to expand and stretch
Simple squamous
Air sacs of lungs and the lining of the heart, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels
Allows material to pass through by diffusion and filtration, and secretes lubricating substance
Simple cuboidal
In ducts and secretory portions of small glands and in kidney tubules
Secretes and absorbs
Simple columnar
Ciliated tissues are in bronchi, uterine tubes, and uterus; smooth(nonciliated) are in digestive tract, bladder
Absorbs; also secretes mucous and enzymes
Pseudostratified
Ciliated tissue lines the trachea and much of the upper respiratory tract
Secretes mucous; Ciliated tissue moves mucus
Characteristics
Cellularity(lots of cells, little matrix)
Polarity(apical and basal surface)
Innervated(nerve endings)
Avascular(lack of blood vessels)
Highly regenerative
Exocrine Glands
Secrete onto external surfaces or into internal passageways(ducts) that connect to exterior
Endocrine Glands
Secrete hormones or precursors into interstitial fluid, usually for distribution by blood stream
