Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
Four basic types of tissue
epithelial, connective, nervous, muscle
What does the epithelial line?
all internal & external surfaces of the body
main functions of epithelial tissue (6)
protection, absorption, filtration, secretion, excretion
simple squamous
a single layer of flat cells
simple cuboidal
single layer of cube-shaped cells
simple columnar
single layer of tall column like cells
pseudostratified
single layer but some cells are shorter than others and often look like a double layer.
stratified squamous
stacked flat cells
stratified cuboidal
two or more layers of cube-like cells
stratified columnar
surface cells are columnar cells underneath and vary in size and shape.
transitional epitelium location/function
dome-like shape, urinary bladder, absorption/secretion
What are epithelia classified by?
cell shape & number of layers
simple squamous function & location
function: diffusion, filtration, gas, exchange
locations: lungs (air sacs), capillary walls clinging inside of vessels, inside of the heart
simple cuboidal function & location
function: secretion & absorption
location: glands, ducts, portions, of kidney tubules, thyroid glands
simple columnar function & location
function: secretion & absorption
location: large ducts, digestive track (microvilli)
stratified cuboidal location
location: sweat glands, mammary glands
stratified columnar location
male urethra, large ducts, pharynx
keratinizes stratified squamous location & function
function: protection
location: skin
unkeratinized stratified squamous function & location
function: protection
location: oral cavity, esophagus, vagina
pseudostratified function & location
function: absorption & secretion
location: large ducts, respiratory tract, urinary tract, male reproductive system.
endocrine & exocrine secretions
endo: hormones
exo: sweat, breast milk, oils
