epistasis Flashcards
what is epistasis
when one gene modifies or masks the expression of a different gene at a different locus
what is the epistatic gene
the gene that masks the expression of the hypostatic gene
what is the hypostatic gene
the gene that is masked by the epistatic gene
epistasis is an interaction between genes at …… loci
…… is an interaction between alleles at the same locus
different
codominance
the …….. ……… genotype at the epistatic locus ……. the effect of the pair of alleles at the hypostatic locus
homozygous recessive
masks
the …….. ………. or ………… ……….
genotype at the epistatic locus masks the effect of the pair of alleles at the hypostatic locus
epistatic gene
homozygous dominant
what are 3 examples of epistasis?
- coat colour in mice
- coat colour in labradors
- fruit colour of vegetables
example of epistasis using labradors
gene 1: controls whether pigment will be expressed
- allele E = dominant, codes for pigment production
- allele e = recessive, codes for no pigment production (always be yellow)
gene 2: controls which pigment is expressed
- allele B = dominant, codes for black fur
- allele B = recessive, codes for brown fur
- EeBb = brown fur
- eeBB = yellow
- EEbb = brown
