Q

What was Lucrecious’ theory of an infinite universe?

A

Lucrecious proposed the universe must be infinite by using the metaphor of standing on a wall in space and firing an arrow. There are only 2 possible outcomes, A. the arrow continues forever never hitting anything proving the universe is infinite. or, B. the arrow hits something which has provided a new surface for you to stand and fire an arrow beyond the obstacle. This process could also continue forever proving the universe is infinite.

Q

Give a brief overview of Giordano Bruno’s life

A

He was banned from the church for reading books that were forbidden. It was the last steady job he would ever have. At thirty whilst sleeping under the stars he had a vision of being in a dome which was his mental representation of the known universe, overcoming an overwhelming feeling of fear he went beyond the dome where the ground fell away from his feet and he flew through the heavens where there was no up or down and no centre. After this vision he became an evangelist (infinite creation believers) and was outcast by many churches and authorities around the world. When presented the opportunity to lecture at oxford he proposed Copernicus was right, he pleaded for people to reject antiquity, tradition, faith and authority and begin a new by doubting everything that had been “proven” or was “known”. He was then taken into custody during the Spanish inquisition and tortured by the church. He refused to abandon his belief in an infinite universe and was burned at the stake for not repenting. 10 years later Galileo looked through the first telescope and proved Bruno right. Bruno gave others a target to aim at even if only to disprove it.

16
Q

What event occurred as far back in time and space as we can currently see?

A

The big bang. There is strong evidence to support the big bang theory such as the amount of helium in the universe and the glowing radio waves left over from the explosion.

17
Q

How old is our galaxy?

A

11 Billion years old

18
Q

How old is our sun?

A

4.5 billion years old

19
Q

What pushed the moon’s orbit further away from earth when the earth was young?

A

Tidal friction caused from the development of the seas

20
Q

How old is life on earth?

A

3.5 billion years old

21
Q

Give a brief overview of the birth of the universe

A

The universe started smaller than an atom. It exploded in the big bang expanding out faster than the speed of light. Gravity the pulled together clumps of gas which heated them and the first stars burst into life. Over time those stars coalesced into galaxies

22
Q

How old is the coal we mine in our earth?

A

300 million years old. It was formed by ancient forests rising and falling.

23
Q

How long did the dinosaurs roam the earth?

A

Over 100 million years

24
Q

How long ago did the first of our ancestors stand on two feet?

A

3.5 Million years ago

25
Q

How long ago were the first cave paintings drawn?

A

30,000 years ago

26
Q

How long ago was writing invented?

A

6,000 years ago

27
Q

What has carried human kind in 4 centuries from looking through the first telescope to leaving our footprints on the moon?

A

The Scientific Method
