Epilepsy And Seizure Disorder Flashcards
What is seizure
Abnormal discharge of electrical activity in the CNS resulting in abnormal motor ,sensory or psychological experiences
Causes of seizures
- serve hypoglycemia
*serve electrolyte disturbances - Toxic substances like cocoaine
Abnormal motor and sensory involvement of sensory
Pre central gyrus
Post central gyrus
Somatosensory : when affected patient may say his hand is burning or under pressure or tingling or loss of sensation
What is temporal seizure and its associated features and what are the functions of temporal lobe
*Temporal lobe is responsible for most of the primitive functions such as smell, π taste π
and sexual function.
*if there is seizure in the temporal lobe it affects the taste ,smell and sexual function thus patient might smell or taste something in their mouth which is not in reality
Seizure in the occipital lobe , mention the areas of the visual cortex and their functions
Areas of visual cortex include
-primary visual area 17: functions primarily in discerning the intensity, shape, size, and location of objects in the visual field.
-secondary visual area 18: Visual Association Areaβ or V2 and is a first stage in processing or feature extraction of retinotopic images from V1.
-Tertiary visual area 19: detection of light intensity, feature attention and pattern detection, and is deputed to spatial working memory.
* seizures in these areas can make patient see things not in reality
What is epilepsy
*Epilepsy is an abnormal recurrent, spontaneous abnormal electrical activity in CNS which may manifest as abnormal motor, sensory physoactive experiences
* epilepsy is when someone has the ability to have seizures again and again
What are the motor sensory types of seizures
*Tonic: The body stiffens, agonists and antagonists fibers fires simultaneously, sometimes respiratory stiffens and patient can be cyanosed
*clonic: patient Jerks ,agonist and antagonists fibers fire alternatively
*Tonic-clonic :agonists and antagonists fire simultaneously then alternatively thus body stiffens and jerks
*Atonic: patients loses tone
*Myoclonic: uncontrollable use of the arm or limb sudden jerks
