epilepsy Flashcards
what is an epileptic siezure
transient occurrence of signs or symptoms due to abnormal excessive neuronal activity in the brain
what are the diff types of seizures
myoclonus
epileptic spasms
clonic
tonic
gelastic
behaviour/emotional change
sensory seizures
diff between generalised and focal seziure
generalised =involve neurons on both sides of the brain at the outset
focal - start on one side of the brain
previously called partial seizures
what could a siezure look liken
daydreaming
boredom
preoccupation
inattention
sensory overload
syncope (fainting)
tics
functional
sleep phenomena
cataplexy or narcolepsy
stiffening from raised icp or hypoxia
main classification of seizures
focal onset
generalised onset
unknown onset
diagnosis of seizures
eeg
history
syncope =
sudden fainting
fallen to the ground
jerked muscles and eye rolling
clonic seizure
sudden repeated /rhythmic jerking movements of the face and link that cannot be stopped
benign neonatal sleep myoclonus
jerking whilst baby is asleep
epileptic spasms
over 1 yr olds = affected
sign of genetic or metabolic disease or structural brain disease
non epileptic attack
an emotional response to something
reflex anoxic sezure
provoked by a sudden distressing stimulus
loss of consciousness followed by stiffening and brief clonic movements affecting some or all limbs
tonic seizures
stiffening / muscle tone increases
atonic seizures
sudden loss of muscle tone
patient falls / floppy
describe focal seizure
impairment of conciousness but no stiffening or shaking
