What is epilepsy?
a condition that affects the brain, causing repeated seizures. There are many different types - some last for a limited time, but for most it is life-long.
When is epilepsy diagnosed?
Anyone can have a one-off seizure, but it doesn’t always mean they have epilepsy. People are usually only diagnosed with epilepsy if their doctor thinks there’s a high chance, they could have more seizures.
What is a seizure?
results from a transient, uncontrolled electrical discharge across the cerebral cortex
Classification of seizures?
partial or generalised. Further classified as simple or complex.
Common types of seizures?
Absence
Myoclonic
Tonic
Tonic-clonic
Aura
Jacksonian
Psychomotor
Possible eye/vision changes due to epilepsy?
Rapid eye blinking
Staring
Eye deviation
Visual field loss
Visual hallucinations
How is epilepsy treated?
No cure.
Medications - many diff types. trial and error until you find the right one.
Dietary therapy - nutritional therapy in combo with meds. Keto diet commonly used.
Devices - sends a signal to nervous system to prevent seizures.
Surgery - removes section of the brain that causes the seizures.
