Anticonvulsants
Therapeutic Action of Anticonvulsants
- increase GABA release
- decreases action of glutamate
- closes ion channels
Focal onset
occurs in a small region of the brain
Types of Focal onset
Focal aware and Focal impaired awareness
Focal Aware
pt is fully aware but unable to talk or respond
Focal impaired awareness
awareness is affected and the person may appear vague or disorientated
Generalised Onset
seizures affecting both hemispheres of the brain
Two types of generalised onset
Motor seizures and non motor seizures
Motor Seizures
Clonic - Tonic movements
Non-motor seizures
brief changes in awareness and automatic and repeated movements of the body
Absence
sudden loss of awareness
Tonic-Clonic
body stiffens and jerks rhythmically
Myoclonic
sudden single jerk of a muscle group
Atonic
sudden loss of muscle tone, pt often falls to the ground
Clonic
jerking movements in various parts
