Epidemiology of BV Problems Flashcards
One of the problems with discovering the epidemiology of BV problems is that the inclusion criteria (i.e., is the condition for all of the subjects in the study actually CI) and the defined population (i.e., is it only optometry students with CI) vary from study to study.

Generally speaking, which is more common, accommodative dysfunction or vergence dysfunction?
Accommodative dysfunction.
Generally speaking, which is more common, “excess” dysfunctions or “insufficient” dysfunctions?
Excess dysfunctions.
Over the age of 60, the likelihood of having a binocular vision or eye movement disorder ________ (increases/decreases).
Increases–
60’s: ~25%
70’s: ~30%
80+: ~40%
Over the age of 60, the likelihood of having an abnormal result in a binocular vision or eye movement disorder test ________ (increases/decreases).
Increases–
60’s: ~40%
70’s: ~45%
80+: ~50%
What proportion of pre-middle-age patients need intervention for their accommodative or vergence dysfunction?
1/3
The following lists general prevalence of accommodative and vergence dysfunctions, from Dr. Cooper’s lecture. Later in the lecture, there was a table listing some dysfunctions found in 3rd graders. Which conditions were found more commonly in 3rd graders?
General Binocular Dysfunction: ~30% AE: ~10% A. Insufficiency: ~10-15% AE w/ CI: ~7% CE: ~7% A. Infacilitiy: ~5% CI: ~5% Basic X: ~3% A. Spasm: ~3% Basic E: ~2% AI w/ CE: ~2%
Accommodative insufficiency (~27% of 3rd graders)
CE (~35% of 3rd graders)
CI (~25% of 3rd graders)
Note that the study with the 3rd graders was very small, which may be why the trends don’t match.
