Epidemiology Flashcards
What is glaucoma?
Ocular tissue damage at least partially related to IOP.
What kind of open angle glaucoma is most common?
Primary open angle glaucoma
What is the difference in cause between primary vs secondary glaucoma?
Primary: do not know what is causing it
Secondary: caused secondary to something else
What is the prevalence of POAG in Caucasians?
2%
T/F: POAG is is 4X more prevalent in AAs thn in Caucasians.
True
T/F: there is a larger prevalence of angle-closure glaucoma in Japanese Americans.
False. JAs are more at risk for normal tension glaucoma.
Chinese are more at risk for angle-closure glaucoma.
T/F: Age is a major risk factor for glaucoma.
True
What is the role of gender in risk of getting glaucoma.
Gender overall is unclear
At what age would you likely screen for glaucoma in AA?
Caucasian?
African Americans: 35
Caucasians: 40
T/F: Intraocular Pressure is a major risk factor of glaucoma.
True. IOP is a major risk factor but it is not as fundamental as once thought.
T/F: Even if both eyes have IOP of lower than 21, the eye with greater IOP will lose field quicker in a patient with glaucoma.
True.
What is the chance a person has a POAG if the pressure is 26?
*70%
And 85-90% chance that the person has POAG if pressure is 30
Does IOP explain the difference in disease prevalence between African Americans and Caucasians.
No. Even at the same pressures, the prevalence of the disease is much higher in AA than Caucasians.
T/F: Latino population appears in early population age as if they are similar to African Americans.
False. Latino population appears in early population as if they are similar to Caucasians, but as they grow older their risk for OAG increases and appears to be similar to AAs.
T/F: Glaucoma is the major cause of irreversible blindness.
True
